Schutzhund, now internationally known as IGP, is a structured working-dog sport developed in Germany to evaluate the qualities required of a reliable and capable working dog. Originally created as a breed suitability test for the German Shepherd Dog, Schutzhund has since evolved into a respected international sport practiced by many working breeds.
The sport is designed to assess a dog’s temperament, working ability, trainability, and mental stability through three distinct phases:
Tracking
The dog follows a human scent trail, locating articles along the way. This phase evaluates focus, scenting ability, perseverance, and calm concentration.
Obedience
Precision heeling, recalls, retrieves, and send-aways demonstrate the dog’s trainability, responsiveness, athleticism, and relationship with the handler.
Protection
The protection phase tests courage, confidence, control, and nerve strength. The dog must engage a helper under specific rules while remaining obedient, clear-headed, and responsive to the handler at all times. This phase emphasizes control and stability rather than aggression.
Schutzhund/IGP is not a test of aggression. Instead, it is a comprehensive evaluation of a dog’s sound temperament, working drive, confidence, and ability to perform under pressure.
For breeders, Schutzhund provides valuable insight into a dog’s genetic strengths and overall suitability for breeding. For handlers, it offers a demanding and rewarding training path that builds a strong partnership between dog and handler.
Today, IGP titles are recognized worldwide and are considered a meaningful measure of a working dog’s ability, character, and reliability.
